Chapal B-3 Jacket in Dark and Chocolate Brown Patchwork Leather
Inspired by the resourceful seamstresses of WWII who would stitch together multiple pelts when supplies were short, this jacket is Chapal’s homage to the military B-3 model worn by aviators in freezing cabins. The slightly asymmetric design is fully lined with honey-coloured shearling and draws on Chapal’s archives – the house was commissioned to create jackets for the French airforce during WWI. As such it’s reliably warm, and Chapal’s military-grade zip, functioning collar tabs and buckles at the hips ensure this jacket will insulate against the most treacherous temperatures. The squared-off collar and boxy fit remain true to the original design. £3,700.00, rake.webdezign.uk.

Cromford Leather Company ‘Douglas’ Flight Jacket in Brown Leather
Cromford Leather Company’s flight jacket has a polished finish, with glossy cowhide leather in coppery chocolate brown complementing the antique silver buckles. With generous helpings of shearling on the collar and sleeves, this is more reminiscent of the RAF’s Irvin jacket, or the kind Lieutenant John A. Macready wore when he set an altitude record of 34,500 feet in an open-cockpit plane in 1921. Rest assured you don’t have to be doing anything nearly as impressive to pull this one off. £3,000.00, rake.webdezign.uk.

Ralph Lauren A-2 Jacket in Ecru Shearling
Ralph Lauren’s A-2 inspired design not only features soft, cosy shearling but is trimmed in vegetable-tanned cowhide leather, which is lighter than the stiff leather used on original military jackets. The chestnut brown leather pockets and ribbed cuffs are carefully aged to make them look antique, with the end result contrasting perfectly against the natural ecru body. A serious collector’s item from the RRL line. £2,170.00, www.ralphlauren.com.

Private White V.C. Peacoat in Navy Wool with Black Collar
Despite its Dutch origins (‘pije’ was a word used to describe coats made from heavier wool fabrics), the pea coat was popularised by the Royal Navy. Private White V.C. – whose military-inspired outerwear is their calling card – has created a design one can feel confident will leave a lasting impression. It’ll upgrade your business-casual uniform with smart touches like a black shearling collar, a water- and stain-resistant fabric finish dubbed ECOSEAM, four neat pockets and a double-breasted closure. £675.00, rake.webdezign.uk.

Brunello Cucinelli Jacket in Grey Nappa-Effect Shearling
Trimmed in cashmere, constructed with water-repellent suede and featuring a removable shearling-lined collar, Brunello Cucinelli’s nappa-effect jacket is the answer to London’s unpredictable weather. Inspired by both the A-1 and A-2 jacket, it features both a concealed zip and button loop closure, a ribbed hem and cuffs and is fully lined. Contrast the soft grey with a vibrant printed scarf to battle the winter months. £4230.00, www.mrporter.com.

Chapal Morrison Jacket in Blue Denim
Denim and shearling has, admittedly, been done before – but not like this. Longer in length than a standard denim jacket, Chapal’s coat turns the volume up to eleven with a deep shearling lining, generous shawl collar and plush ivory suede panels hand-stitched by expert craftsmen in Chapal’s Parisian workshop. Pair with colourful knitwear and fend off frostbite on weekends in the country. £1,550.00, rake.webdezign.uk.

Loro Piana Coat in Stone Grey Shearling
This stripped back design in wintery stone-grey is surprisingly elegant for a coat cut in shearling, and Loro Piana’s standards are exacting when it comes to sourcing fibres and fabrics. The cut allows for layering in chillier conditions, but avoid wearing in rainy weather – or be prepared for your dry cleaning bill to burn a(nother) hole in your sheepskin pocket. £5,330.00, www.mrporter.com.

Corneliani Jacket in Chocolate Leather Shearling
The eighties and nineties saw a new wave of popularity for long leather jackets, immortalised in films like Goodfellas, Fight Club and The Matrix, and Corneliani’s shearling jacket evokes a certain sense of nostalgia. The design prioritises comfort with super-soft leather, reinforced stitching and a loose fit.

Ermenegildo Zegna Coat in Olive Green Suede Shearling
There’s a lot to be said for vintage shearling, as it ages so well, but when contemporary designs like this one look so good, we know which one we’d prefer. Skip the arduous task of sifting through rails of vintage and add this earthy olive green coat by Zegna to your Christmas list, and your great-great-grandkids will thank you for it one day. (Note: we fully condone buying presents for oneself when they are this cool.)
£2,110.00, www.zegna.co.uk.

Cromford Leather Company Eastwood Coat in Natural Shearling
By naming this coat after Clint Eastwood, an icon of cowboy culture, Western films and masculine style, Cromford reconnects the shearling coat with its primitive origins; man has used sheepskins to keep warm since the Stone Age, evolving to raise sheep on farms for food and wool. This design is a particular favourite of Cromford’s owner, Pauline Harris, and boasts distinctive military detailing like reinforced buttons and a double-breasted closure, making it a durable piece of outerwear.
