What To Buy This Week: All Talk, All Trouser

E. Tautz Field Trousers in Dark Indigo
As is often the way, denim is the easiest possible method to experiment with this style and E. Tautz has been playing with trouser widths for a few seasons now. Their SS17 collection of Field Trousers allows you to dip your toe in the vintage workwear aesthetic with indigo dyed selvedge denim, without spending hours poring over second-hand, suspicious-smelling antique apparel. Take a leaf out of designer Patrick Grant’s book and wear with the hems turned up twice over chunky commando boots (to give those capacious hems some lift) balanced with a luxe bomber jacket.

Bottega Veneta Pant in Chino Cotton
Hawk-eyed Rake readers might recognise these from our latest issue, in which their nero alternative are paired with, well, absolutely nothing. However, these are one of the rare items that truly translates from magazine page to personal collection. Paired with a piqué knit off-white T-shirt, exotically patterned Cuban collar or a high-twist travel blazer, they simply call out for summer styling that looks effortless and natural yet fitted enough on top so as to balance the volume of the bottoms. The outward facing front pleats create the optical illusion of a flat stomach (if, unlike our model, your abs couldn’t cut glass), and the side-adjusters and fishtail back perfect the flattering effect of the high waist.

Armani Linen & Silk Trousers
Armani has always been able to channel the louche lady-killer vibe of the 80s (see: Richard Gere in American Gigolo), and these inevitably romantic beauties are no exception. The ruched waistband draws the eye inwards to the waist, but the otherwise clean lines of the trousers keeps them flattering and elegant, highlighting the leg-lengthening abilities of the wider-legged cut. Propping up a bar in the heat of high-season Cap D’Antibes, they should be paired with suede tassel loafers, an ice cold Martini and polarised sunglasses for maximum effect.

Givenchy Satin Band Wide-Legged Trousers
The high waist of the wide-legged trouser is essential; it defines one’s silhouette and adds polish to a style that, executed badly, looks like you’ve bought a size or two too large. Referencing 1950’s Hollywood, Givenchy’s eveningwear trousers are made in a wool/mohair blend that provides both structure and a strong outline, defined further by pressed creases and a satin trim. The duality of the texture, unfinished hems and minimal design allows the overall effect to do all the talking, and feels considerably easier to pull off when the sun goes down and the forgivingly-lit establishments beckon.

Armani Casual Linen and Silk Print Trouser
For some, the statement of wide legs and billowing hems may not be statement enough. The geometric cross-fleury pattern of Armani’s spring/summer trouser has personality by the bucket load, in a linen/silk blend and textured crêpe finish that will inject a healthy dose of playful print into your wardrobe. Once again keep it tailored on top, with a neutral unstructured blazer or tucked-in utility shirt and some casual, off-duty white sneakers to balance out the bold print. Alternatively, play up the red accents with a saccharine coral button-down and sun-kissed skin.

Ami Double Pleat Wide-Legged Trousers
Ami is a youthful, edgy brand with a fresh take on everyday essentials, and its collection of wide-legged trousers simply serves to provide further proof of this. The grey pick-and-pick wool pair is ideal for bringing a modern twist to your professional uniform whilst the ecru cotton trews are easy to throw on under just about anything, such is their versatility. The double pleats mean you can have a little more fun with proportions, and they also come in black, brown, marine and navy, so you might as well give in to temptation and order one of each – wide legs are here to stay, and we can’t wait to see more. £235.00, www.amiparis.com.
