Erotic watches are nothing new. The earliest can be traced back to the late 17th century, when the wealthy would commission painted or engraved scenes of a saucy nature, unknowingly providing a different meaning to #watchporn, the popular horological Instagram hashtag of a few hundred years later. Whilst early erotic watches would feature simple yet colourful painted scenes of a mythological nature, the decades that followed saw said scenes take on a more explicit tone. This was only amplified when those clever Swiss watchmakers realised they could bring their filthy scenes to life with complex mechanical movements. Repeating mechanisms within the watches powered an almost always muscular male figure who boasted the phallus of a stallion as he joyously thrusted along to the sweet chiming of the movement. Seeing one of these curious scenes in the flesh is really quite something. Watch brands have never stopped producing kinky watches, and today there are a select few on offer for the discerning client. Here are five of The Rake’s favourites, both old and new…

Richard Mille RM 69 Erotic Tourbillon
For their RM69 timepiece, Richard Mille have reinterpreted the classical notions of erotic timekeeping. Instead of portraying a particular scene, the innovative design team have introduced three windows that rotate at the push of a button, revealing a sensual phrase that is generated at random. It’s a playful interpretation and one that provides over 200 different options ranging from the suggestive to the downright shocking. An incredibly complex timepiece, the rollers are activated by a pusher at ten o’clock yet even more impressively the hands retract when the eight o’clock pusher is pressed, allowing one to take in the full majesty of the dirty talk.

Blancpain Le Brassus Carousel Minute Repeater
Blancpain are perhaps the kings of the erotic watch world. They allow clients to commission their own designs or alter existing erotic scenes, but they produce a number of limited run pieces also, such as this Le Brassus Carousel Minute Repeater. An incredibly tricky watch to make - the carousel at six o’clock counters the effects of gravity - it features a long-haired pair of lovers who appear to have a musical instrument fetish, as the female suggestively plays a tune as her partner makes sweet love to her.

Ulysse Nardin Hourstriker Erotica Jarretiere
Not quite as subtle as its forbearers, and not even attempting to hide its carnal depiction, Ulysse Nardin’s Hourstriker Erotica Jarretiere shows everyone and their mother what’s happening. A homage of sorts to Venice, the Rialto Bridge and Grand Canal are visible in the background but all the attention is focussed on the 18k rose gold couple cavorting between ten and twelve o’clock. The black dial is made from onyx, matching the alligator strap and contrasting perfectly against the rose gold of the lovers and the case.

Breguet Concealed Erotic Automaton Pocket Watch
Featuring a beautiful silver, engine-turned dial and 18k pink gold case, this Breguet pocket watch appears to be a humble time-only piece, yet at six o’clock a a sliding gold plaque reveals a erotic scene, which in 1825 when this watch was made would have been quite the statement.

Bovet Musique D’Amour Quarter Repeater
This Bovet pocket watch was made in approximately 1810. Like many of the best erotic watches it displays the time modestly, albeit with an exquisitely engraved dial depicting a landscape complete with train, mountains and contrasting blued hands. Flip the watch over though and pop open the case-back cover and the viewer becomes a voyeur. An elaborately engraved and hand-painted scene reveals itself, featuring a man so dedicated to style that he decided keep his enormous hat on. Well played.
